As the largest regulator-appointed pension administrator in Canada, Morneau Shepell is frequently employed when pension plans are wound up in cases of bankruptcy or insolvency.

In 2012 the Company established its Asset & Risk Management practice as an extension of its asset and risk services department. The new practice offers implemented consulting solutions which utilize the outcome-oriented style of investing to achieve targetted outcomes for clients and further offer cash management, de-risking strategies and dynamic rebalancing.

As a third-party portfolio manager and trustee, the Asset & Risk Management practice develops investment policies, provides asset allocation advice, makes specific investment recommendations, and provides analysis and portfolio monitoring services. In November 2014 the practice was named the fastest-growing money management organization in Canada (with assets under $1 billion) by Benefits Canada magazine. As of June 30, 2014 it had $739.5 million in assets under management.

During 2014 the Asset & Risk Management practice received regulatory approval to offer the Voluntary Retirement Savings Plan (VRSP) to employers in Québec who do not provide another group retirement solution to their employees. The establishment of the VRSP in Québec followed on the federal government's Pooled Registered Pension Plans (PRPP), which make flexible and low-cost employee retirement savings solutions available to federally-regulated employers. PRPPs were enshrined in law during 2012 and will serve as a model for other provinces to follow in introducing legislation for similar plans in their jurisdictions.

Historical Overview

Morneau Shepell is the result of the fusion of a number of predecessor organizations, coupled with the ongoing development and growth of the resulting organization.

W.F. Morneau & Associates was established in 1966 as a benefits consulting and administration firm. It undertook an expansion into the United States in 1987 to provide employee benefit plan management services to U.S. employers.

In 1997 W.F. Morneau & Associates combined with the Sobeco organization, which at the time was part of Ernst & Young. Sobeco was founded in 1962 and, among its early assignments, was involved in the design and establishment of the Québec Pension Plan.

In 2008 Morneau Sobeco acquired Shepell.fgi, Canada's largest provider of employee health and productivity services. The combined organization is equipped to offer a more comprehensive list of services for meeting the human resources needs of clients.
