Open Text Corporation engages in the development of enterprise information management (EIM) software for governments, global-scale corporations and mid-market enterprises. The Company's software lets clients manage business content and big data regardless of the form it is in, operate with greater efficiency, strengthen connections with customers, collaborate with other businesses, follow sound corporate governance practices, and meet regulatory and operational compliance requirements.

The Company’s software is provided through on-site implementation and through cloud and managed services.

Open Text has built out its business from its core area of expertise, enterprise content management software. Through organic growth and the acquisition of other businesses, the Company has assembled the critical elements of an integrated enterprise information management solution for capturing an organization's ideas, experience and knowledge and managing the complete lifecycle of its electronic content. In the two and a half decades since its founding, the Company has grown to today's 8,000 employees and over USD $1.6 billion in annual revenue. It software products support organizations in over 140 countries.

The Company’s software product offerings are grouped into five categories: Enterprise Content Management (ECM), Customer Experience Management (CEM), Business Process Management (BPM), Information Exchange (iX), and Discovery. Industry-specific solutions are offered to customers in the energy sector, engineering and construction, financial services, media and entertainment, life sciences, law, utilities and other areas, and to public sector clients.

Enterprise Content Management

Content Management — A repository for business documents coupled with solutions for document organization, display, classification, access control, version control, event auditing and rendition, and for document and content searching.

Records Management — The means for controlling the complete lifecycle of enterprise records by associating retention and disposition rules specifying if and when records are to be deleted or archived on storage media.

Archiving — Solutions for managing content storage policies according to business context, for optimizing storage use, and for providing secure, long-term storage services.

Email Solutions — Services for archiving, controlling and monitoring email to reduce the size of the email database, improve email server performance, manage the lifecycle of email, and monitor email for compliance purposes.

Collaboration — Facilitation of collaborative work activities through tools including project and community workspaces, wikis, polls, cloud-based file sharing, blogs and discussion forums.

Business Process Management

Business Process Management — Tools for analyzing, automating, monitoring and optimizing routine business processes which integrate content and people who make decisions on the basis of that content.

Dynamic Case Management — Combines workflow, content management, business rules, portal and collaboration tools for dealing with one whole unit of work. Has the dynamic ability to adapt to changing requirements and define tasks required for case resolution rather than following predefined and structured processes.

Process Applications — Prepackaged business process management solutions for managing structured and unstructured processes. Utilizes process management, case management, content management, capture, collaboration, analytics, customer communications and information awareness capabilities.

High Volume Imaging — Conversion of paper documents to electronic format, and classification and management of both paper documents and documents created in electronic format. For use in highly-structured process automation and content retrieval.

Business Architecture — A platform for enterprise business planning, modeling and architecture. Enterprises use this platform to implement solutions to process and information management challenges and to undertake operational process and transformation initiatives.

Reporting and Analytic — Dashboard reporting solutions for better oversight over operations, for better performance measurement, and for the identification of bottlenecks and process issues, resulting in better overall decision-making.

Customer Experience Management

Web Content Management — Software for authoring, maintaining and administering websites which integrate content from internal and external sources.

Digital Asset Management — A set of content management services for browsing, searching, viewing, assembling and delivering rich media content including images, audio and video.

Customer Communications Management — Software which assists organizations by automating the processing and delivery of personalized customer communications in digital or print format.

Social Communities — Applications which enable organizations to socialize their online presence by adding blogs, wikis, ratings and reviews to, and by building communities for, public websites and employee intranets.

Portal — Enables the aggregation, integration and personalization of corporate information and applications, facilitating personalized views of information for executives, employees, partners and customers.

Information Exchange

Business-to-Business Integration — A suite of e-commerce services for supporting the global electronic supply chains of multi-national enterprises and small and medium-sized businesses, linking customers, suppliers and service providers.

Fax Solutions — Products for simplifying fax and electronic document distribution and reducing paper fax.

Connectivity — Brings together people, data and critical business applications via virtual desktops and terminal emulation for desktops and mobile devices.

Capture and Recognition — Tools for converting documents in analog form, such as paper or fax, to electronic form while adding value through the use of optical/intelligent character recognition, barcode scanning and other functions.

Secure Messaging — Auditable, secure messaging and file transfer solutions across an organization and between an organization and its business partners.


Search — Indexing of internal and external information for real-time monitoring and fast retrieval using secure, permissions-based search.

Content Analytics — The extraction of meaning, nuance and context from vast amounts of unstructured content residing in the organization.

Semantic Navigation — Website content aggregation and analysis for enabling contextual navigation of web pages by end users.

Auto-Classification — Defensible and transparent enterprise records management through the use of intelligent metadata extraction and classification.

eDiscovery — In-house classification and analysis of electronically-stored information and extraction of relevant information in preparation for litigation.

Information Access Platform — Applications for consolidating, archiving and migrating content from nearly any system or information repository and for decomissioning legacy systems. Disparate applications are replaced with a common information management platform.

Global Partnerships

Open Text's alliance with Microsoft Corporation has resulted in improved integration between Open Text's enterprise content management applications and Microsoft's desktop and server products, including Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft Exchange. Open Text partners with Oracle Corporation to develop solutions for Oracle applications, extending Open Text's enterprise solutions framework and building on the Oracle Fusion open standards-based applications. Open Text provides solutions for Oracle applications including PeopleSoft Enterprise, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, JD Edwards World, Oracle E-Business Suite and Siebel. The long-term partnership between Open Text and SAP AG has resulted in targeted Open Text solutions which enable organizations to create, access, manage and securely archive content, including data, multimedia content and documents, for SAP systems.

In addition to these strategic alliances, Open Text partners with software and hardware developers, systems integrators and consultants to develop technologies and service offerings which enhance customers' experience with the Company's enterprise information management offerings.


Open Text Corporation's earliest software offerings grew out of a full-text indexing and string search technology devised at the University of Waterloo in the late 1980s. The technology served the New Oxford English Dictionary project by allowing access to the vast amounts of data being input into electronic format and marked up using Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) in this major endeavour. The Company was incorporated in 1991 initially to develop and commercialize this and other search technologies.

With the advent of the browsable Internet the Company applied itself to developing online search technologies. In 1995 it introduced Open Text Index, which became a popular commercial web search engine in the mid-1990s, while its attention increasingly focused on the application of the Internet to the needs of business enterprises.

The 1995 acquisition of Odesta resulted in the transformation of Open Text's business. The combination of Odesta's Livelink collaborative technology and Open Text's Latitude Web-based distributed document library led to the launch of Livelink Intranet in 1996. Livelink Intranet brought the power of the Internet to enterprises faced with the task of managing their documents while allowing authorized users in global locations to securely access, work with and modify documents via an Internet browser to support either workflow or collaborative projects.

In 1997 Open Text acquired Campbell Systems, a provider of enterprise group scheduling software. That year the Company also introduced its Affinity Solution Provider program through which the Company worked with software development companies as they serviced their customers needs in the burgeoning corporate intranet market. By 2004 the program would be deepened and expanded to become the Global Alliance Program.

In 1998 the Company acquired Information Dimensions and integrated the latter's BASIS enterprise document management products and Techlib library management solution with Livelink. This acquisition expanded Open Text's user base to 2.5 million users in 3,500 corporations worldwide, placing the Company in a leadership position in its industry.

In late 2000 AIIM International advanced the term "enterprise content management" to describe the business in which Open Text was already a clear leader with a user base of more than 4 million. Over the next several years the Company strengthened its product offerings through the acquisition of the BRS/Search and Query Server search and retrieval solutions from LearningSide, and through the acquisitions of Eloquent (including its LaunchForce™ solution for deploying corporate knowledge to front-line employees), Centrinity (including its FirstClass® messaging and collaboration solution), and Corechange and its solutions for establishing and operating corporate portals. 2003 ended with Open Text's purchase of Gauss Interprise, an acquisition which strengthened Open Text's web content management and business process management solutions, opening new markets in the areas of Internet retailing and publishing. The Company acquired the VistaPlus suite of integration and report management products from Quest Software in 2004.

In February 2005 the Company completed the acquisition of IXOS Software, an industry leader in the long-term archiving of documents and the integration of archived content with leading business software applications. The acquisition added IXOS' highly scalable archival and document management solutions to Open Text's strength in collaboration solutions.

In April 2005 Open Text introduced the Livelink ECM Platform. Chief among its features was the use of service-oriented architecture (SOA), which permits the creation of applications from services or pieces of functionality operating together independently of their underlying platforms or programming languages. Using the SOA model, the Livelink ECM Platform united IXOS Software's archiving solutions (under the new name Livelink Archive Server) with the Livelink content management and collaboration solutions (renamed Livelink Enterprise Server).

In September 2006 the Company made a highly significant acquisition, that of Hummingbird, a global developer of enterprise content management and network connectivity solutions with significant customer bases in the legal and government markets. The acquisition included RedDot Solutions, a business purchased by Hummingbird in June 2005. The Hummingbird acquisition considerably expanded Open Text's size and expanded the reach of its global partner program.

During 2008 Open Text began shifting toward the concept of a unified enterprise content management suite. As a key element in the process, the Company adopted the name OpenText ECM Suite to describe its product offering.

In October 2008 Open Text acquired Captaris. This acquisition provided the Company with software which automates document-centered processes and enhanced the Company's ability to offer solutions which integrate with SAP, Microsoft and Oracle solutions. The July 2009 acquisition of Vignette added web content management, portal, collaboration and records management expertise to the Company. October 2010 brought the acquisition of StreamServe, a developer of enterprise business communications solutions for delivering personalized documents in digital or paper form.

In February 2011 Open Text acquired Metastorm, a developer of software for business process management, business process analysis, and enterprise architecture. Global 360, a provider of business process management and case management solutions, was acquired in July 2011.

During 2011 the Company rolled out Open Text Everywhere, a new application which broadened the OpenText ECM Suite's availability to include mobile devices.

In July 2012 Open Text acquired cloud-based messaging and business integration services provider EasyLink Services, recognized for its leadership in cloud-based Secure Information Exchange. In early 2014 GXS Group, a specialist in business-to-business cloud integration services, was acquired. GXS Group's solutions are used by organizations to integrate and manage business processes and electronic transaction information across their global networks of customers, partners and suppliers. These and other acquisitions during this period significantly advanced Open Text's service offering in the cloud environment.

In January 2015 Open Text acquired business intelligence software company Actuate Corporation, a developer of scalable solutions for delivering personalized analytics and insights from structured, semi-structured and unstructured data.
