Company Notes:In April 2001 the Company acquired Commercial Union Life Assurance Company of Canada, prior to that time part of CGU Group Canada Ltd., and changed Commercial Union Life Assurance's name to MFC Insurance Company Limited. The policies and liabilities of MFC Insurance were subsequently assumed by The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company. In March 2002 the Company acquired Zurich Life Insurance Company of Canada from Zurich North America Canada and made it a subsidiary of The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company. Zurich Life Insurance Company of Canada was subsequently renamed Manulife Canada Ltd. In April 2004 the Company acquired John Hancock Financial Services, Inc., a major American life insurance company headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts.
