Company Notes:In April 2001 the Company acquired Commercial Union Life Assurance Company of Canada, prior to that time part of CGU Group Canada Ltd., and changed Commercial Union Life Assurance's name to MFC Insurance Company Limited. The policies and liabilities of MFC Insurance were subsequently assumed by The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company. In March 2002 the Company acquired Zurich Life Insurance Company of Canada from Zurich North America Canada and made it a subsidiary of The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company. Zurich Life Insurance Company of Canada was subsequently renamed Manulife Canada Ltd. In April 2004 the Company acquired John Hancock Financial Services, Inc., a major American life insurance company headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. Hancock's Canadian subsidiary The Maritime Life Assurance Company was included in the acquisition. (In November 1999 The Maritime Life Assurance Company had acquired Aetna Life Insurance Company of Canada. In October 2001 Maritime Life had acquired Royal & Sun Alliance Life Insurance Company of Canada. In July 2003 Maritime Life had acquired the group health insurance business of Liberty Mutual Group, the Canadian operations of Liberty Mutual Insurance Company of Boston, Massachusetts.) In September 2009 Manulife Financial Corporation acquired the Canadian retail investment funds of AIC Limited. On December 31, 2009 John Hancock Financial Services, Inc. was merged into a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company. In January 2015 Manulife Financial Corporation acquired the Canadian-based operations of Standard Life plc. These operations were held through Standard Life Financial Inc. and Standard Life Investments Inc.
